The Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL), is a set of good practices for IT service management (ITSM) that focuses on aligning IT services with the needs of business. ITILv3 underpins ISO/IEC 20000 (previously BS15000), the International Service Management Standard for IT service management, although differences between the two frameworks do exist.

ITIL describes procedures, tasks and checklists that are not organization-specific, used by an organization for establishing a minimum level of competency. It allows the organization to establish a baseline from which it can plan, implement, and measure. It is used to demonstrate compliance and to measure improvement.

To recognize the candidate investment in ITIL qualifications and endorsed Complementary Qualifications, a credit system has been introduced to support the ITIL scheme.

Within the ITIL Credit System, all ITIL and ITIL related qualifications have been assigned with a specific credit value, based upon the content of ITIL material, which is covered by the qualification.

Upon successful completion of any module of ITIL study recognized under the system, a candidate will be rewarded with both the certification and the attributed credits.

To achieve the ITIL Expert Level of certification, candidates need to meet a specific set of key requirements, which include earning a required number of credits (22) from qualifications, which cover the full spectrum of ITIL Best Practice
