The 2-day Professional Scrum Product Owner level 1 (PSPO 1) course provides the foundational knowledge needed to work with Scrum in a highly practical way, specifically from the viewpoint of the role of Product Owner role. The course is a combination of instruction and team-based exercises where students experience how the Scrum Framework improves product development efforts.

Throughout the course, students will develop and solidify their knowledge of being a Product Owner through instruction and team-based exercises. The breadth of the role’s responsibilities in delivering a successful product will become more clear from an Agile perspective. Metrics are identified to track the creation of value and the successful delivery of the product to the marketplace.

Participants are eligible to claim 14 PDUs from Project Management Institute (PMI), upon attending this course.

At the end of the training, the participants shall be able to:

Module 2 – The Fundamentals of Scrum (1.5 hrs)

  • Sprint Zero
  • ACTIVITY: Create a Vision Box and high-level Release Plan

Module 3 – Roles and Responsibilities in Scrum Teams (1.0 hrs)

  • Scrum Teams: Cross-functional and Self-organising
  • Fundamentals of the Product Owner Role
  • Working with Stakeholders
  • Working with the Development Team
  • The Scrum Master
  • ACTIVITY: Creating a Scrum team, establishing team norms

Module 4 – Value-Driven Development and Product Backlog (5.0 hrs)

  • Customer Research and Product Discovery
  • Testing Product Assumptions
  • User Story Lifecycle
  • ACTIVITY: Identifying key epics and writing user stories
  • Differentiating Outcome and Output
  • Defining Value
  • Ordering Items using MoSCoW
  • Creating and Refining Items (Compound and Complex Slicing)
  • ACTIVITY: creating a Prioritised Backlog for the product

Module 5 – Sprint Planning and Execution (5.0 hrs)

  • Sprint Planning
  • Estimating Size of Epics and Stories using Planning Poker
  • ACTIVITY: Use Planning Poker to size the Stories in the Backlog
  • Sprint Backlog and Task List
  • ACTIVITY: Creating a detailed Sprint Plan
  • The Burn Down and Burn Up Charts to track progress
  • Sprint Review
  • ACTIVITY: Conducting a Sprint Review with the Product Owner and Customer
  • Sprint Retrospective

Module 6 – Release Management (2.0 hrs)

  • Product Ownership with Multiple Teams
  • Scaling Scrum to larger projects (Scrum of Scrums)
  • ACTIVITY: Create a Release Plan for a Multiple Team project
  • Summary and Class Closure

This course is for anyone involved in product development using the Scrum method. It has been specifically conceived for those responsible over products from a business and product management perspective and taking up the highly accountable role of Scrum Product Owner.

There are no pre-requisites for the course and examination. However, experience and awareness of business environment and project work is an advantage.

Certification

A certificate of course completion will be provided upon successful attendance to at least 75% of the course duration.  Additionally, this course is the first step in preparing participants to obtain the Professional Scrum Product Owner certifications (PSPO I, II Assessments) given by Scrum.org.
